Maruti Suzuki, the largest car manufacturer in the country, today launched the new Maruti SX4 sedan with an engine powered by advanced VVTtechnology. Maruti India has also introduced a 4-speed automatic transmission variant of the new Maruti SX4. The environment friendly new Maruti SX4 is amongst the first A-3 segment sedans to be BSIV compliant in the country. BSIV regulations are scheduled to be introduced in the country in April 2010. The new SX4 comes with a brand-new sporty honeycomb grille and 10-spoke 16 inch alloy wheels and dual tones interiors and plush upholstery. The VVT or Variable Valve Timing allows the timing of the intake valve to be changed while the engine is in operation, thereby ensuring that there is never a shortage or wastage of power. This leads to improved engine efficiency, optimized fuel consumption and lesser carbon emissions. With the advanced VVT technology, the car starts, accelerates and climbs steep slopes better. In essence, the technology is an intelligent system leading to a smoother, more luxurious drive and better mileage. With a more efficient engine, the new Maruti SX4 has ARAI certified mileage of 15.6 km per litre of petrol. The superior technology engine helps the SX4’s four-valve, 1.6 litre engine produce a maximum power of 104.68ps @5600 rpm. The engine also has a high torque of 145Nm @4100 rpm. The 4-speed automatic transmission makes the city drive much easier. A slick shift allows easy down-shift and effortless up-shift to ensure a smooth and sporty drive. The instrument cluster incorporates an electronic display to highlight the engaged gear. A cluster of computer controlled sensors constantly manage the throttle input and optimize the engine response accordingly, thus requiring no changing of gears. The overdrive mode in the Automatic Transmission provides additional power on the tap, whenever needed. The interiors have been stylized in new two-tone beige colours to define calmness and luxury within the vehicle. The steering mounted controls are illuminated for easier usage at night, while there is a new provision of USB connectivity on the dashboard. In addition auto climate control system, and windshield antenna, the newMaruti SX4 sedan also offers illuminated key insert and variable instrument illumination. The new Maruti SX4 is available in 2 transmission - Manual and Automatic. While Manual Transmission has two variants VXi and ZXi, the Automatic Transmission is available in ZXi variant with optional leather upholstery. The ZXi variant also comes with safety features like ABS, EDB, Dual SRS airbags. The Maruti SX4 sedan is the tallest, widest car in its class. It also has the largest fuel tank capacity at 50 litres. It comes with the widest tyres and a boot space of 505 liters. The ground clearance of the new SX4 sedan is 190mm, the highest in the A3 segment.

BMW to unveil two new Mini models
Latest-autos:BMW plans to build two new Mini models at its plant near Oxford in southern England, in a vote of confidence for UK manufacturing and a significant boost for the hard-pressed motor industry.
Norbert Reithofer, BMW’s chief executive, said in an interview with the Financial Times that the move would entail new jobs and investment at the facility, which is operating close to its capacity of 200,000 to 220,000 cars a year.
The German carmaker will unveil “concept” or pre-production versions of a Mini CoupĂ© and a second, as yet undisclosed, car at the Frankfurt motor show this month as it expands its British premium small-car brand.
“I am pleased to announce the Mini CoupĂ© concept car and another new Mini model will both be built at Oxford,” Mr Reithofer said. The Cowley, Oxford, plant employs about 3,500 people and is one of Britain’s largest car factories.
The plans by General Motors to sell control of its European Opel/Vauxhall arm to the Canadian motor supplier Magna International or industrial group RHJ have raised fears for the future of its two UK plants. The Luton plant, which makes commercial vehicles with France’s Renault, is seen by analysts as vulnerable to closure.
In February BMW axed 850 temporary workers at its plant, provoking anger from unions, which claimed they were sacked without notice.
BMW was embarrassed by footage showing workers shouting at a colleague informing them of the cuts. The Tories claimed that the government’s initiatives to support business were failing. Since then Mini sales have rebounded thanks to surging global demand for smaller cars and BMW has rehired most of the temporary workers.
Mr Reithofer would not comment on potential job increases in the UK or a production timetable for the new Minis. Concept cars typically enter production after three years’ development.
Mini plans to build the brand’s first small sport-utility vehicle in Austria from next year at Magna Steyr, a contract carmaker owned by Magna. Analysts speculate that Mini might begin producing cars in the U.S., its largest market.
The two new models planned for Cowley would probably create additional production volumes large enough to require a second assembly line, entailing the creation of thousands of new jobs, said one analyst.
“It isn’t a small number of people needed to staff an assembly line,” said Eric Wallbank, of Ernst & Young. “You’re talking four-digit numbers, potentially.”
